Extended reality: the umbrella term
Extended reality, or XR, is commonly used to describe technologies that create virtual environments or combine digital content with a view of the physical world. It includes virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality.
Virtual reality
VR presents a simulated environment through a headset. Users can look around and, depending on the application and hardware, interact with objects and processes. Facility orientation and procedural rehearsal are examples of possible uses.
Augmented and mixed reality
AR overlays digital information on a view of the physical world. Mixed reality commonly describes experiences in which digital elements are spatially integrated with the surrounding environment and can be interacted with. Product terminology varies, so focus on the actual capabilities of the device and application.
Choose the experience around the purpose
Consider visibility of the real environment, the required interaction, user comfort, access and deployment constraints. FourPlus’s training platforms use immersive process experiences for learning. HPIL builds on process expertise to develop an execution data and intelligence layer for operational support, quality review and future automation.
